JOURNEY BACK TO THE 18TH CENTURY – PREPARE AND ENJOY A COLONIAL MEAL IN ONE OF THE LARGEST KNOWN PERIOD FIRE PLACES IN CONNECTICUT
Ever wonder what was like to live back in the late 1700’s and what it might have been like to cook your daily dinner meal? Your chance to have some fun, eat good food and experience cooking in one of the largest known period fire places in Connecticut, is Sunday, October 15th, from 11:00am to 4:00pm in Jerusha Welles’ Kitchen at the Welles-Shipman-Ward House in South Glastonbury. You’ll be guided through preparing an 18th century meal that Jerusha Welles might have made for her family. Your entree will be Beef a la mode, a beef similar to today’s pot roast except cooked with “bread balls.” Accompanying the main dishes will be heirloom vegetables grown on site at the Welles-Shipman-Ward kitchen garden. In the beehive oven located in the grand fireplace will bake artisanal bread and apple pie. As the fire begins to warm the kitchen and the fragrance of your dinner cooking on the hearth fills your nose, you’ll set the table and enjoy Pounded Cheese and crackers with Glastenbury cyder.
In the 18th century, people ate very well. The “receipts” (18th century word for recipes) used for this meal date to around 1800. The food is quite flavorful and hearty. Only a small group of people may partake in this dinner so everyone gets to participate completely. This event will fill up fast. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. First come, first served. Please call 860.633.6890 for reservations. $55.00 per person. If you enjoy cooking or eating a good meal, if you “want to see how they did it back then”, or just want a unique, pleasant way to pass an autumn afternoon, please join the Historical Society of Glastonbury Sunday, October 15th at The Welles-Shipman-Ward House for Dinner in Jerusha’s Kitchen. All proceeds benefit Historical Society of Glastonbury Education and Preservation Projects.
