Staples of their society then; staples of our society now

The Historical Society of Glastonbury is once again brewing up history.  On Sunday, October 22nd from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the Welles-Shipman-Ward House join us for a demonstration of colonial bread making and beer brewing.

Not so different from today, beer was a central part of colonial life. Untrusting of local water sources, English settlers continued the England household tradition of making beer for all members of the family.  These low-alcohol table beers were manufactured from malted barley supplemented by additives such as molasses or even beans (to keep down the cost).

The demonstration will introduce you to traditional 18th century beer-making techniques that were conducted in most colonial households. We will mash the malt, add our hops to the boil kettle while we discuss the joys and challenges of colonial brewing.  If you lived in the 18th century you’d have to wait up to three weeks for your brewed beer to be ready for drinking! But don’t worry you won’t have to wait that long; we’ll have some samples.   Your hosts are both Glastonbury residents.  Mr. Mark Packard our bread demonstrator also hosts our Maple Sugar demonstration every March. For his day job, your brew master Mr. Brian Jones serves as Connecticut’s State Archaeologist.

Bread will be baking in the beehive oven in our grand fireplace and there will be samples to enjoy.  The house, barns and shed will be open to tour. Admission is $5 per person.  The Welles-Shipman-Ward House is located at 972 Main Street (Route 17) in South Glastonbury.  Parking is available on site, with overflow parking at St. Augustine’s Church, at 55 Hopewell Road.   A well-maintained short path from the parking area leads to the WSW house.
